You only have to read Lincoln's first inaugural speech!!
Apprehension seems to exist among the people of the Southern States that by the accession of a Republican Administration their property and their peace and personal security are to be endangered. There has never been any reasonable cause for such apprehension. Indeed, the most ample evidence to the contrary has all the while existed and been open to their inspection. It is found in nearly all the published speeches of him who now addresses you. I do but quote from one of those speeches when I declare that–
I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.

The idea that the civil war was about slavery is preposterous since:
1. There were four UNION states that were allowed to practice slavery throughout the war
2. There were many UNION generals that were slaveowners during the war.
The war was about tariffs and states rights and the right to secede just like the original 13 colonies had seceded from england just 80 years earlier. THINK

US Grant once said " If i thought this war was about freeing the slaves, i would resign immediately".

Please supply proof this was a quote from Grant, thanks.
As soon as slaveryfired uponthe flagit was felt, we all felt, even those who did not object to slaves, that slavery must be destroyed. We felt that it was a stain to the Union that men should be bought and sold like cattle.

You should probably read South Carolina's Declaration of Seccession. I didn't see tariffs as the reason. They mention slavery at length.
"A geographical line has been drawn across the Union, and all the States north of that line have united in the election of a man to the high office of President of the United States whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery. He is to be entrusted with the administration of the Common Government, because he has declared that that “Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free,” and that the public mind must rest in the belief that Slavery is in the course of ultimate extinction."

I have read them already, so thanks for the advice! We all know slavery was important to the South but that's because it was a mainly non-mechanised agrarian economy. Again I will point out that the North, and especially Lincoln, cared far far more about the punitive tariffs they levied on the South.
The war was fought over money and power. In 1860, 80% of all federal taxes were paid by the South and 95% of that money was spent on improving the North. Don't you think that the South might a good reason for feeling aggrieved? Holy shit the Boston Tea Party happened for much the same reasons.
Now run along and go prove me wrong!!

Not according to the articles of secession of all the slave states.
