People would be more willing to invest in Afghanistan if there was a viable strategy that hasn't already been tried. Pressuring Pakistan over terrorism in Afghanistan sounds great, but it's really nothing new.

The ANAF is now a valid fighting force unlike when Obama did his surge..that's not the problem..
the problem is getting to a political settlement.

That's not going to happen w/ the Taliban making gains ( and Russia's current negotiation includes them)

The only way to stop that is to roll back their gains, and force a grand political settlement.
If that doesn't work we stay in a whack a mole posture

It had already started at the time of the speech: "on the same day of the speech, ABC News announced that ninety advance troops from the 82nd Airborne Division had already arrived in Baghdad."

And if you're saying no military specifics, you haven't read the speech. Good lord, he handed it to them on a silver platter.

    "20,000 additional troops"
    "five brigades deployed to Baghdad"
"troops will work alongside Iraqis and embed in their formations"
    "clear and secure neighborhoods"
"increase forces in Anbar province by 4000 troops"
"deployment of additional carrier strike group to the region"
    "deploy Patriot air defense systems"

we need an India buy in. we need to stop the porous border thru Wazi and Quetta. we need to rollback the Taliban
we need to get some Russian cooperation ( and the b.s. in DC has surely harmed that).

we need a lot to get there-but at least we have this plan now and not the floundering nothingness under Obama

We couldn't do it back in 2001 when bush first started the war and kept adding troops throughout his presidency. 36000 troops on the day of Obama's inauguration. Eight years of bush leadership resulting in zilch.

you moron. Where do I advocate " spreading democracy"by wars of choice? (interventionism).
That was the Hillary legacy - her exact goal in Libya. she demanded that from the NTC ( and they lied)

cleaning up this existing mess with some improvements is not "interventionism"

Mattis has some plans, nothing concrete for any final number.

    *************************************************

Defense Secretary James Mattis has plans on the table to send about 4,000 more to add to the 8,400 deployed in Afghanistan currently, Reuters reported.

Trump said success would be determined by conditions on the ground and not dictated by a specific timeline.

Trump said the U.S. would no longer announce in advance when it intends "to begin or end military operations."

"We will not talk about numbers of troops or our plans for further military activities," said Trump. "Conditions on the ground, not arbitrary timetables, will guide our strategy from now on. America's enemies must never know our plans or believe they can wait us out. I will not say when we are going to attack, but attack we will."

Abortion rights dogma can obscure human reason & harden the human heart so much that the same person who feels
empathy for animal suffering can lack compassion for unborn children who experience lethal violence and excruciating
    pain in abortion.

Unborn animals are protected in their nesting places, humans are not. To abort something is to end something
which has begun. To abort life is to end it.

It is now. You're just not paying attention.

Honestly, your double-standard is epic. And the cavalier manner in which you talk about sacrificing young lives is chilling.
