if one bothers to READ all the documentation that the framers and commentators made during the run up to ratification of the Bill of Rights, one would see that the 'well regulated militia' was thought of as EVERY male capable of bearing arms to hold a new central government in check and keep them submissive to the power of the people living in freedom. it did not mean government controlled. anything to the contrary is nothing short of wishful and desperate thinking of the cowardly statist.
A sad commentary on we, as a people, and our viewpoint of our freedom can be summed up like this. We have liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, yet those very people look at Constitutionalists as radical and extreme.................so those liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans must believe that the constitution is radical and extreme.
