ACLU defends Coulter after Berkeley speech cancellation

The American Civil Liberties Union is condemning the threats that forced Ann Coulter to cancel her speech at the University of California, Berkeley.

“The unacceptable threats of violence that have led to the ‘hecklers’ veto’ of Ann Coulter’s speech at Berkeley are inconsistent with free speech principles that protect us all from government overreach,” David Cole, the ACLU’s national legal director, said in a statement Wednesday after Coulter canceled her appearance, which had been scheduled for Thursday.

“Hateful speech has consequences, particularly for people of color, LGBTQ people, immigrants, and others who have been historically marginalized,” Cole continued. “But if the government gets to decide which speech counts as hate speech, the powers that be may later feel free to censor any speech they don’t like.”

He added: “For the future of our democracy, we must protect bigoted speech from government censorship. On college campuses, that means that the best way to combat hateful speech is through counter-speech, vigorous and creative protest, and debate, not threats of violence or censorship.”

Poor snowflakes, even the ACLU doesn't agree with you.

When the ACLU starts defending conservative's speech you know a line has been crossed lol.

I have to ask though, what was bigoted about Coulter's speech?

That's because it's usually conservatives who oppose free speech.

Yurt...the ACLU gets a lot of heat because they defend the rights of even the most vile and disgusting hate mongers like Coulter. Aren't you glad you have them protecting your rights from those mean terrible post modernist liberals?

lol. You need to learn to read between the lines. If the ACLU cared one whit about free speech rights of coulter they would have spoken out before the event got cancelled. Its not like the issue hasnt been there for weeks. Now ACLU get to have their cake and eat it too. The event get cancelled and they get to pretend they are pro-speech of everyone by releasing this statement when it does not matter anymore.

The ACLU will only speak up for organizations that hurt Republicans. If some branch of the KKK or some neonazi group want to march the ACLU would happily provide flags and a venue. After all they dont accomplish anything anyway.

When a mildly relevant figure on the right is scheduled to speak like Shapiro, Coulter, or even Milo the ACLU will be quiet as they are silenced. After all they have a shot at convincing people.

Seriously? Its the wrong question. What isn't hateful about her speech would be closer to the truth. Her arguments are almost always ad hom logical fallacies intended to demonize those who disagree with her. If that's not hate then I'd not like to see what your idea of hate is.

Which is beside the point. As long as her hate speech is not fighting words or intended to create a public disturbance or panic it's constitutionally protected speech and aren't you glad you have the ACLU to protect Ms. Counters hate speech?

How about when she said someone should put rat poison in Justice Stevens' creme brulee, for starters?

You're full of it, sookie. The ACLU has spoken out plenty about free speech as an individual right. They don't have to single out any one person before the fact. They would defend trump's right to free speech no matter how hateful it is. You can take that to the bank.

    Right-wingers touting the ACLU???

AMERICAN HISTORY ITSELF IS A TESTAMENT TO THE STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE OF AFRICAN PEOPLE. WE, ALONG WITH THE COURGE AND SACRIFICES OF CONSCIOUS WHITE AMERICANS, LIKE VIOLA LIUZZO, EVERETT DIRKSEN, AND MANY OTHERS, HAVE FOUGHT AND DIED TOGETHER FOR OUR FREEDOM, AND FOR OUR SURVIVAL.

In America, rights are are not determined by what is just, fair, equitable, honest, nor by what Jesus would do. Rights are determined ONLY by what you can DEMAND.
