The question of what is a "liberal" is a very good one.
Too many, although not all, of those who call themselves liberal today are not the kind of people I'd want to get stuck in a foxhole with.
It doesnt mean your AGAINST Bush in 2007 now that he is unpopular by the general public....
That takes no political courage.... Thats a Chuck Hagel cowardly move...
A liberal is somebody who will call out the stupidity and cowardly democrats like Desh and Cypress.
A liberal is somebody who opposed the War in Iraq in 2003.... NOT 2007
A liberal is somebody who wants to impeach BUSH
A liberal is somebody who believes in affirmative action
A liberal is somebody who voted AGAINST the Patriot Act
A liberal is somebody who is willing to say flat out Bush stole both 2000 and 2004 elections....
A liberal is saying the truth even when 90% of the people are against you...
A liberal is somebody who believes Condi Rice is just a token...
Watermark my friend, i'm glad your changing your views to the better...But you still have alot to learn.
You should try and start learning some liberal views....go to 2 of the best...DailyKos and MyDD...
CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, NBC, none of these are liberal networks...

And Watermark you have no principles. Flip Flopping .....
Seriously.... I trust Dano more than I trust you bro....

Strangely enough that reminds me of the tendency of some on the left (can't speak for the right, never been right wing so can't reference those of that persuasion) to demand that their associates (me for example) toe the line on what it means to be "left". Stray from the doctrinal path and watch the calumny. While I appreciate the idea in the post that consistency is important I also think it's more useful to examine policy issues on their merits as they arise, rather than be given a template to be applied on direction of a factional boss (I'm referencing what used to happen in my experience where I live).
CK is one confused little bugger.
He thinks not agreeing with him is antiliberal.
He puts me on the list of people who he thinks is phoney because he is angry at me for taking him to task on some of the completetly idiotic things he has said in the past.
He does this to Cy also.
Did CK just accuse someone of being emo?
"It [the draft] is duty rather than slavery. I part with the author on the caviler idea that individual freedom (whatever that may be to the person) leads to nirvana, anyone older that 12 knows that is BS."

Affirmative action is racial and gender disrcrimination. That's not liberal, it's a small minded revenge-oriented viewpoint.
I'd say that generally speaking in today's political terms, a liberal is one who wants government to regulate the economy to a very substantial degree, wants to government be involved in (most) social matters to a lesser degree, and wants an interventionist foreign policy more aligned with Western Europe/U.N. Generally, a liberal is a moderate socialist who at least wants to protect most civil liberties.
Out of the Democratic contenders for President, I'd say that Kucinich, Gravel, and to a lesser extent Obama fits this description of a liberal. Clinton and Edwards don't give a toss about social issues and civil liberties. They're just statists who take a left-center position.
