A video has emerged of Leave campaigner Boris Johnson saying in a 2013 interview that he would vote to stay in the European single market.

When asked by former ITV News deputy news editor Darren Burn how he would vote in an EU referendum, Mr Johnson says: "I'm in favour of the single market, I want us to be able to trade freely with our European friends."

Boris the blatherer is not alone in switching.


A leading Conservative has switched sides to the Remain camp ahead of the EU referendum, and warned: "We cannot just carry on irresponsibly running divisive campaigns and xenophobic campaigns."

Baroness Warsi, a former Foreign Office minister, had been a Brexit supporter but said she had been turned off by what she described as the spreading of "hate and xenophobia" by the campaign in favor of leaving the European Union.

She said Nigel Farage's controversial anti-migrant poster was the final straw that persuaded her to switch sides.

The UKIP poster showed migrants queuing to get into Europe under the slogan "Breaking Point".

She said: "What we have consistently heard in the last two months is that the Turks are coming and the terrorists are coming and the Syrians are coming and the refugees are coming and the Muslims are coming and it is not the kind of campaign that we should be running.

"It is not the vision we should have for a pro-Brexit Britain."

Lady Warsi is not the first politician to criticize the UKIP poster.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon described it as "vile and racist", while Chancellor George Osborne said it was "disgusting" and had "echoes of literature used in the 1930s".

Campaigners on the Leave side were equally as scathing, with Justice Secretary Michael Gove saying he "shuddered" when he saw the poster and Chris Grayling calling it "wrong".

UKIP leader Farage defended the poster, however, telling Sky News that it "reflects the truth" about migration and the European Union.

Farage told Sky's Dermot Murnaghan the poster - which has been reported to police for alleged racism - would not be appearing again.
