Default West Virginia in the news

A 15-year-old boy was killed when he was struck in the head while playing a game of "dodging arrows" at a friend's house, and criminal charges could be possible, authorities said.

Caleb Fairchild, an eighth-grader, was playing the bow-and-arrow game when he was hit by an arrow, West Virginia State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous said.

No parents were around when Caleb and two other kids were playing in a front yard, said State Police Sgt. C.R. Sutphin. The ages of the others involved weren't released but authorities said they were minors.

A jury has convicted the man who threatened to seize control of the state capitol and the government of West Virginia.

Thomas David Deegan, 39, was found guilty of making a terroristic threat. The jury deliberated for one hour.

The prosecution’s case centered on a recorded conference call where Deegan talked about his plan.

“The conversation was the actual crime itself,” Wood County Prosecutor Jason Wharton said. “The jury was able to hear the entirety of the conference call.”

Deegan’s intentions were clear during that conference call, Wharton said.

Deegan told those on the conference call they should shoot those who offered any resistance.

Deegan, who represented himself during the trial, said the conference call was for "education."

“It was one of 12 calls and was taken out of context. I have studied laws and I see where they are going wrong. I just find errors. I never called myself a sovereign citizen,” he said.

The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office has made an arrest in connection with a church arson.

Investigators say the fire was intentionally set and destroyed the church.

Caleb Joseph Lusk, 27, of Fort Ashby, was arrested and charged with arson.

Investigators say Lusk set the fire "out of spite". They say he was depressed and having domestic problems and allegedly targeted the church because his wife and family were attending the church.

State Police are investigating a child pornography incident in Charleston.

According to a criminal complaint, troopers were given a cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The cybertip revealed images of what appeared to be child pornography.

The complaint states that the images were of a girl who appeared to be approximately 15 to 16 years of age.

The trooper obtained a subpoena for the IP address from Suddenlink. It was discovered the pictures came from Noyes Avenue in Charleston.

Troopers say Jone Rowe is the customer on the Suddenlink account. Rowe is already a registered sex offender.

During a search of Rowe's home, troopers discovered nine electronic devices that contained evidence of child pornography.

The items were transported to Huntington to be searched and analyzed.

A Digital Forensic Analyst told troopers that there were images of child pornography on the devices.

According to the criminal complaint, Rowe asked for a lawyer during an interview with state police.

Rowe is charged with distribution and exhibiting of material depicting a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
