Pittsburgh high school shooting: 3 shot near Brashear High School; 6 people questioned
Six people are being questioned after three gunmen wearing all black fired shots near Brashear High School in Pittsburgh's Beechview neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon, striking three students. Police say they are investigating whether the shooting was over a drug-related dispute.
Three high school student were shot just outside Pittsburgh's Brashear High School before six people were taken in for questioning over a possible drug-related dispute, according to police.
Cops said three men wearing all black came out of woods and fired off several shots before retreating into the same wooded area at about 2:50 p.m., minutes after classes let out, according to
WPXI-TV. Two of the students wounded are said to be aged 17. A third is 16, according to the station which described them as three friends.
Pittsburgh school district spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said the students' injuries appear to be non-life-threatening. Two of them were described as grazed in the head by a bullet and one shot in both the foot and arm. It’s not clear who shot them.
Terri Minor identified her 17-year-old nephew, Eugene Minor, a junior at the school, as one of the three victims. She told CBS that he was shot in the shoulder and the neck before hospitalized conscious and alert, and in stable condition. The second 17-year-old was hospitalized after a bullet grazed his head, said Minor.
Six people were taken in for questioning about two hours after the shooting, said Pittsburgh public safety director Michael Huss. Police wouldn’t say whether they’re also students, and Police spokesperson Diane Richard said they’re not suspects or necessarily going to be charged. Richard told reporters that they believe
the shooting was "in retaliation" for an incident that happened on Oct. 18. The victims were described as not cooperating with police.
Pugh said the students were shot as they walked to a vehicle they’d all taken to school earlier in the day. Witnesses said the suspected shooters may have jumped into a car after the bullets rang out. Police continued to scour a wooded area near the school, which is home to almost 1,500 students and said they recovered shotgun shells near the scene.
Brashear, a magnet school, is the largest school in Pittsburgh located about two miles south of downtown.
