Thumbs up Americans buy record numbers of guns for Christmas

Americans bought record numbers of guns last month amid an apparent surge in popularity for weapons as Christmas presents.

According to the FBI, over 1.5 million background checks on customers were requested by gun dealers to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System in December. Nearly 500,000 of those were in the six days before Christmas.

It was the highest number ever in a single month, surpassing the previous record set in November.

On Dec 23 alone there were 102,222 background checks, making it the second busiest single day for buying guns in history.

The actual number of guns bought may have been even higher if individual customers took home more than one each.

Explanations for America's surge in gun buying include that it is a response to the stalled economy with people fearing crime waves. Another theory is that buyers are rushing to gun shops because they believe tighter firearms laws will be introduced in the future.

LOL...I bought my boy (8 years old) a gun for Christmas this year. Makes 2 years in a row. As to the why for the spike in gun sales, I think that the bolded portion above is more logical. In case I did it wrong, the part that says that some are worried about more stringent gun laws in the future. I do know people who think if Obama gets a second term he will legislate more from the left in every venue, including firearms laws. Some may be scared of that, I really don't know.

Ahh, don't worry desh, I'm not completely nuts. He's becoming quite a duck hunter and likes to kill squirrels too. If he sharpens his accuracy up over the summer and into the fall I'll take him deer hunting. Fun times for me and my boy....just like with my dad and me. My dad who taught me, as I am teaching my son, "if you kill it you eat it."

I can think of a million other ways to bond with a child that doesnt include him learning how to kill.

Its likely because prices are pretty low. Importers have been competing to move the most units, often selling at or lower than cost.

    Desh, stop being ignorant.

how else will a young american citizen learn what it takes to defend his/her freedom?
A sad commentary on we, as a people, and our viewpoint of our freedom can be summed up like this. We have liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, yet those very people look at Constitutionalists as radical and extreme.................so those liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans must believe that the constitution is radical and extreme.
