I think my political views and values probably differ more from my area than pretty much anyone on the board. I'm a socialist and atheist in a state that's very Republican and religious. The Democratic vote is only even as high in the state as it is because of black religious-liberals (whom I don't have much in common with either) who vote for Democrats by 90% margins. If you isolate non-black voters, the state is easily 80%-90% Republican, and their only beef with the party is that it isn't conservative enough. And everyone, liberal or conservative, hates atheists and the nonreligious here. We are a small segment of the population even compared to other parts of an already unusually religious country.

Does anyone else compare to that?

I would imagine my beliefs differ from my neighbors considering many of them are retired and reasonably well off. They probably feel they've worked harder and longer than anyone else and struggled and scratched and scraped to get where they are.

I meant to make this poll public and am hoping to get an admin to nuke it before many people comment. :-/

The local area I'm from is a bunch of farmers descended from southern German Catholics. Dixie looks like Ralph Nader compared to most Mercer county Buckeyes. Hell, they hate the Nazi's for being to liberal. They think Ike was a fucking commie.

I was talking to a farmer at a pub my father frequents who seriously believes anyone who doesn't own at least 100 acres shouldn't have the right to vote. Dude was serious as a heart attack too. I fucked with him by asking if I would qualify for the vote if I owned 1,000 shares of BP instead of land? He didn't get the joke.

LOL, acres for a vote. That is insanely conservative and out of place in the modern world. I've heard of random nutjobs on the internet wanting property requirements, but land requirements? From back in the days of landed and aristocrats and plantations? Fucking unreal that anyone thinks like that.

Scary part is he's not outside the mainstream of that community. There were several others in the bar who don't own a pot to piss in who were nodding their heads in agreement. They gave me a funny look when I made the BP stock wise crack. My old man was taking a sip of beer when I said that and he about spit it across the room.

I live in moonbat-central, I'm a libertarian. So I'm basically 180 degrees opposed to the local politics.

It doesn't matter what you're opposed to if you're a libertarian. Libertarians are about as relevant as pixie dust, the Easter Bunny, Lepricans and have the leadership potential of Fredo Corleone.

    no they are doomed.

Look it's very simple. Once you give people money, it's next to impossible to take it back.

Good luck privatizing social security, or medicare.

Democrats realized this genius truth a long time ago. It's simple human nature. Once people get a taste, they are hooked. Government entitlement programs are more addicting than heroin.

Americans do not want small government, they only pretend to want small government when it benefits them in some way. Christians want small government until it comes to keeping their god out of every facet of our lives. Rich people want small government until it effects subsidizes for corporations. Liberals never want small government.

I used to be a hardcore libertarian. I still sympathize much with them, but I have had the optimism beaten out of me. They will never be successful, they are wasting their time. Their efforts would be better spent taking over new hampshire.

We are a nation of proles.

Watermark wanted to make the poll public and has asked me to close the thread.
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

Believe nothing on the faith of traditions, even though they have been held in honor for many generations and in diverse places. Do not believe a thing because many people speak of it. Do not believe on the faith of the sages of the past. Do not believe what you yourself have imagined, persuading yourself that a God inspires you. Believe nothing on the sole authority of your masters and priests. After examination, believe what you yourself have tested and found to be reasonable, and conform your conduct thereto.
