They were a threat, just not anything to lay awake afraid of at night. The threat was hyped by the government and media. The Communist threat was more of a Communist concern.
Fear makes money and encourages voters.... So hype fear.

Christians were basically the same 100years ago. Muslims will eventually revolt against conservative social law.
