    Default Would LBJ have won?

If LBJ had not withdrawn his candidacy for Presidency in 1968 could he have beaten Nixon?

I think he would have. LBJ had a level of ruthlessness that Humphry never had and Nixon was, by temperment, utterly incapable of playing politics above the table. LBJ new this and had the dirt on him. As an act of political decency, he made sure Humphry had that information too but Humphry was to concerned about how that information was obtained to use it. Subsequently he lost. I have no doubts LBJ would have used any and all information he had about Nixon's skulduggery during that campaign against him no matter it's source. Considering that Nixon did indeed undermine the 1968 Saigon peace conference, an act of treason, I'm certain LBJ would have won.

It sure would have been an interesting election.

Nixon sure did get lucky. Two times in a row he ran against some of the most inept competition. LBJ was anything but inept at politics. He probably would have won.
