One reason for this is that some cases of so-called cultural appropriation do amount to real injustices. It was, for example, immoral for White musicians in the US to steal the songs of Black artists who were barred from big careers because of racial discrimination, or for collectors in the UK to loot art from the country’s former colonies. But does the concept of cultural appropriation actually help to express what is wrong in such cases?

Cultural appropriation is inextricably tied up with aesthetics and it is not a new phenomenon. If we take a look at art history, cultural appropriation has been going on for centuries, and many of the world’s most celebrated art movements and objects are the result of it. Greek sculptures, and particularly their freestanding, life-size nudes, called ‘kouros’, clearly show the influence of Egyptian art. The Romans appropriated large amounts of Greek culture, and so on.

Fast-forward to the 20th century and ‘great’ artists, including Picasso, Gauguin and Matisse, formed modernism out of appropriating other cultures’ art, crafts and artefacts into their revolutionary practice. If you haven’t seen Alfred Barr’s famous flow-chart for modern art, it shows the notion of borrowing art forms from other artists and cultures played a defining role in creating modernism.

I said largely homogenous. Not universally homogenous. The native indigenous populations of Siberia, the Caucuses, the Russian Far East are fairly insignificant compared to the European Slavic population of Russia. For the most part, it was the European Slavs killing each other in the Russian civil war.


Compared to Brazil, United States, or Canada, China is relatively homogenous but has a three thousand year history of internal war, revolution, civil war, chaos.

Any American citizen would be shocked to their core if they could somehow bear witness to the violence and cruelty that persisted and flared up throughout Chinese history

They aren't even close. China has several distinct languages within the country, and close to 60 ethnic and racial groups many of which are not Asian.



Russia is the same way. Russia has had pogroms against various ethnicities, the Cossacks being one in particular, Chetnians another. Ukranians today and not for the first time.

By comparison the US and Canada have been until very recently very homogeneous. Both were overwhelmingly of European origin with small ethnic minorities. In the US Blacks represented the largest minority throughout the nation's history until recently.

Colors on a map does not indicate ratios or percentages. Western China is sparsely populated compared to eastern China, and the ethnic minority populations of western China are insignificant compared to the Han Chinese of the east.

If you want to walk into a State Department meeting and holler that China is basically as heterogenous as Brazil and United States, you need to be prepared to be laughed out of the room.

Once again, I clearly, explicitly , and conciously wrote that Russia and China are largely homogenous, not universally homogenous.
