A SoCal City Is Replacing Its Entire Fleet of Police Cars With Teslas
    May 10, 2023 | 1:30 PM
One Southern California police department is ready to go fully electric.
The city of South Pasadena's police department is replacing its fleet of vehicles with Teslas, according to the Los Angeles Times. The switchover has already begun and is expected to be complete by the start of next year.
The police department will reportedly lease 10 Model Y SUVs (pictured above) and 10 Model 3 sedans, which will be used for patrol, detective and administration work. Some of the battery-powered vehicles are already in use, while others still need to be properly outfitted for patrol. More than 30 charging ports are being installed at city hall, as well.
South Pasadena is leasing the EVs through Enterprise, according to the L.A. Times. Nearly $2 million in city funds, along with an additional $500,000 from a local committee working to reduce vehicle pollution in the area, has been allocated for the leasing agreement, which will run for at least five years. The price may sound steep, but the city expects to save $300,000 per vehicle on fueling and maintenance over the next decade.
"We have been investigating this transition for five to six years and determined that these electric vehicles will be the best operationally for us," police chief Brian Solinsky said in a statement to the paper. "They are the safest and fastest vehicles and will save the city money in lower maintenance and fueling costs."
Once all the EVs are in use, South Pasadena will become the first American city to convert to a fully electric police car fleet. The quiet suburban community-which covers 3.4 square miles and has a population of around 26,000-is "environmentally conscious" and is also taking steps to be more bike- and pedestrian-friendly.
Judge Juan M. Merchan wrote that Trump “appears to take the position that his situation and this case are unique and that the pre-trial publicity will never subside. However, this view does not align with reality.”

Joey wet panties, are you sure people are unhappy with this forced purchase? I suspect criminals are laughing. You obviously do not understand that 99% of patrol vehicles are left running 100% of the time because of the heavy draw of all the electronic equipment. Ever think the extra drain on the battery of an EV will become a joke?

Well someone has to be the first to test it but yeah, police vehicles are basically never turned off except for repair, refueling or when they are not in use.

This means that Pasadena will need a set of teslas for every shift or that the officers will need to keep going back to the station to get a charged car.

It’s possible to make this work but it’s not very efficient

There's so much you don't understand about EVs. That's why you're so confused.

Get back to me in ten years with how the citizens thought that this worked out, was a good idea.

    Hell, make that five years.
The bottom line is that conservatives cant admit to themselves the Evil they have allowed to romp on their watch.

    This is going to hurt.

I'd be more pissed off about the cost, not the fact they're EV.

Forced purchase? Who forced the police to buy Fords or Chryslers? You guys are so crazy with that forced crap. They will save a lot of money. Lots of trucking fleets are going electric. Your stubborn ignorance will keep you on the outside, looking in. They said they will save 300,000 bucks per vehicle over the contract. Even in a lying fish world full of lies, you can see what a huge savings that is.

True but installing a new camshaft is a lot cheaper than buying a new battery pack. You can upgrade a base sedan to an "interceptor" for under $3K. Battery packs run about $15K.

Yep. And they have a larger alternator to run all the electrics in the vehicle. When seconds count, the battery (powered) car dies...
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.
