BTW, I have read several books on Sherman but not his Memoir. I also live about 45 minutes from Sherman’s hometown of Lancaster, OH.

In Columbus our NHL Team is named after a Civil War Union Company “Blue Jackets” from Ohio. So every time Atlanta comes up to play the Blue Jackets the fans all wear Gen. Sherman masks. It’s a hoot even if it does work against us. Atlanta hate the Blue Jackets. LOL

Well Sherman did to but what he is saying is historically correct. A lot of the so called man power advantage Grant had was locked on building and defending his lines of communication and transportation.

It is thick and the copy I read was written on very thin paper that I was afraid of ripping. I got it from the local library. They had to have it sent in from the main branch.

Personally I like Grant but that does not forgive the fact that he was a slave owner for more than two years.. And remember those plantation slave owners were Democrats.

Oh for Pete’s sake. First the slave was a gift to Grants wife by her slave owning father, Grant treated the man well, worked side by side with him in trying to build Hard Scrabble for which the locals were appalled that he did manual labor side by side with the man and then less than two years he freed the man when he could of sold him for $1500 which at that time was worth more than twice the annual median household income and Grant was dead broke at the time.

Nor does it take into account that, with time and experience, a person can change and grow as Grant did on the issue of slavery and Civil Rights. Grant was deeply moved by the dedication, loyalty, courage and fighting skills of the Black Soldiers he enlisted. Let’s not forget Grant was the first major Union Officer to utilize freed slaves and created the Freedman’s Bureau during the war. He also fought for and succeeded getting Black soldiers equal pay. Not to mention Grant de facto permanently won Black folks freedom by defeating the Confederacy on the Battlefield.

I would also suggest that you read what the Contemporary Black Intellectuals of that time, such as, Frederick Douglass, felt about Grants service and commitment to Freed Black Folk.

I mean if all you have is he inherited a slave from his wife that he shortly there after freed when he was dead broke all I can say is “Ward, don’t you think you’re being a little hard on the Beaver?”.

So, Grant was a slave owner.

Those plantation slave owners were American conservatives who happened to be Democrats in the American south. They were slave owners because they were American conservatives...not because they were Democrats.

The putrid American conservatives have always been scum...and always been wrong on every serious problem our nation has ever faced. They were wrong during Revolutionary times, when they (known then as Tories) were the ones arguing that we all owed our loyalties to George III, who was, they said, our liege lord. During Civil War days, they were wrong by being the ones who owned slaves and who broke away from the Union to preserve that right. More recently they are wrong because...well, mostly because they are fucking morons.

To call Sherman a racist by today’s standards is an anachronism. Few people did as much to end slavery as Sherman did.
