Default Christian Nationalism's Popularity Should Be a Wake Up Call

In America, we have seen suffering inflicted on refugees, boldfaced white supremacy and cruelty, attacks on gay and transgender Americans, open anti-Semitism, the destruction of Roe V. Wade, and even an attempted coup. These are all worrying examples of supposedly unthinkable developments this ideology serves. Whether it will enable further losses of civil rights and liberties, oppression, totalitarianism, and even war remains to be seen, but much will depend on our understanding of the very real nature of this threat.

A philosophy of “righteous persecution,” forwarded by Saint Augustine, creates justification for oppression, telling true believers that inflicting suffering on sinners is justified if it is for their own spiritual benefit or the benefit of the faith. This has legitimized unthinkable horrors, including enslavement, genocide, colonization, and tyrannical systems that haunt our past and our present.

Our modern moment is once more defined by these concepts. The warnings that used to be relegated to Sunday mornings fill the halls of Congress and are repeated 24 hours a day on Fox News. Individuals and families that would have probably sat across the aisle from me all those years ago are now regularly posting pictures of themselves brandishing semiautomatic weapons with biblical quotes in the captions. And that’s only when they’re not retweeting QAnon conspiracy theories that tell the same horror stories that inspired other authoritarian movements like Nazism, Fascism, and have led to one annihilation and war after another.

Not all of these militias and Neo-Nazi and White Supremacist groups have a lot to do with Christianity. The danger is in the extremism and in the nationalism. But good points nonetheless. Vigilance is a necessity.

Christianity on display at Capitol riot sparks new debate

The Christian imagery and rhetoric on view during this month’s Capitol insurrection are sparking renewed debate about the societal effects of melding Christian faith with an exclusionary breed of nationalism.

The rioters who breached the Capitol on Jan. 6, leading to federal charges against more than 130 people so far, included several people carrying signs with Christian messages, and video showed one man in a fur hat and horns leading others in a prayer inside the Senate chamber. They also included multiple current or former members of the U.S. military or law enforcement, as well as a West Virginia state lawmaker.

The rise of what’s often called Christian nationalism has long prompted pushback from leaders in multiple denominations, with the Baptist Joint Committee on Religious Liberty forming the Christians Against Christian Nationalism coalition in 2019. But in the immediate wake of the insurrection, other Christian leaders spoke out to denounce what they saw as the misuse of their faith to justify a violent attack on a seat of government.

Christian nationalism helped fuel Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol

Less portrayed in mainstream media, however, is the Christian hue of it all: the Capitol-focused Christian prayer rallies in December that propagated post-election lies; the Christian flags unfurled as rioters mounted the Capitol steps; the pastors and self-proclaimed apostles who exhorted the D.C. crowds of Trump supporters; the rioters speaking in tongues; the Proud Boys kneeling to pray before they went off to stomp some heads.

RB is about as Christian as your typical garden toad. He has his good points but he has his very bad points as well. Bigotry is one of them. We've all seen that.

Every one of those people in those pictures are protesting peacefully. None are in the capitol, nor are they causing any type of disturbance.

Last week you called a mixed-race person a "mongrel." You also think that every time someone legitimately criticizes something a so-called Christian is doing, that means that they hate ALL Christians.

twumpism is directly responsible for the escalation in white supremacy and resulting violence - in trump's speech after his trip down the escalator he declared how "Mexicans are rapists - they're bringing in drugs" and his repeated attacks on minorities and the media caused the escalation as well. trump voters were ordered by twump and his clown car not to trust the media, so they only trust sources like InforWars and rumors on FB.

There will come a day where Donald Trump is gone, but the dishonor of those who carried his water will remain.
