Tom Browning played for my Reds. What I loved about Brownie was he was an every man’s athlete. He looked like an average guy and nothing like an elite athlete. With a running start he might have been able to throw 90 mph.
He was one of the best off-speed pitchers I’ve ever seen and he had a wicked curve ball/slider. He had an uncanny ability to get a side out in 10 pitches or less. So he could eat up a lot of innings.
I don’t think anyone who was a baseball fan back then will forget how his career ended. That was every bit as gruesome as Joe Theismans injury.
