Religions ALWAYS evolve with the evolving social norms. Often it drives a wedge between the moderates in any religion and the unhinged extremists who cleave to the magical words of the holy book (ie the BIble telling people gays are an abomination to God and hating them while giving themselves a pat on the back for "hating the sin not the sinner", but you know they really hate the sinner).

But religion has to serve people, and since it is all made-up any way people can drive the religion in any direction they want.

Overall it's a good thing. This is how it has ALWAYS been done.

Just look to the debates between Paul and the apostles in Jerusalem over whether to allow gentiles into the faith. Paul opened up a Jewish sect to those of us who weren't jewish and it became religion.

And over the course of a few centuries people had councils and conferences to cobble together the "faith" as it is today. Prior to some of these councils in the first few centuries of the second millenium were in direct response to the plethora of versions of Christianity. Some were going off of manuscripts that were later deemed inauthentic. Some people held radically different views on the holy nature of Jesus. The reason you say the Nicene Creed today is because of that. It was in direct response to the heresy of Arius whose followers believed that Jesus was separate from God as opposed to his current status as homoiosious with God.

So, yeah, religions change with the times. They change because HUMANS make the change.
