A football fan raises the picture of Palestinian paramedic Razan Al-Najjar, who was murdered by Israeli snipers in 2018, during the #FIFAWorldCup2022 in Qatar.
Razan, the angel of mercy, was murdered in the Great Return March in Gaza while trying to help wounded demonstrators.

Having banned the Russians from competing entirely FIFA is in no position to claim that sport is not a platform for politics.

Israel should never have been in the competition anyway. Its illegal occupation breaks FIFA's own rules.

The Political Side of the World Cup: How Palestine United the Arabs

Palestinians in Gaza celebrate Moroccan historic victory over Spain.

For us, Palestine is not just Israeli wars and occupation, but also numerous facets of social struggle and popular resistance, not for mere survival, but for change, growth and, ultimately, justice and freedom.

World Cup 2022: Palestine beats Israel on football’s big stage

The soccer authorities must be made to ban Israel from competing in international competitions.
The Israelis operate teams in illegally-occupied Palestine and have a record of shooting known Palestinian footballers through the knees and feet.
Yet they are still allowed to compete.
    The stench is overpowering.

Morocco today became the first Arab team to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Morocco now play France, their former colonial oppressors, in the semi-finals of the World Soccer Cup.

In recent years, international sport has become increasingly politicized. I personally regret that this has happened- but as it has it would be foolish to try to pretend otherwise.
By banning the Russians from this competition FIFA has aligned itself with NATO . It had previously aligned itself with the US by refusing to ban Israel from international competition - despite Israel's appalling record as an invasive, aggressive and racist state- and while cynically claiming that the reason for allowing Israel to participate was because " sport should not be political " Well, they've driven an eighteen-wheeler through that particular , slithering, hypocrisy by banning the Russians- a ' banning Russia ' trend which has been evident now for some years.
What we are likely to see in future- unless FIFA changes its pro-western ways- is the collapse of international sport into fragments, much like the state of professional boxing. Of course, the ' World Series ' being confined to Americans has been a standing joke for decades.
So, good luck to the Arabs next week. If they can refrain from engaging in the illegal ' fouling' techniques displayed by both the French and the Argentinians to date, then they stand a chance of completing their matches with a full complement of players- because, sure as fucking hell , western pressure on the officials to prevent them from winning this trophy will be immense- and it has become a political trophy as much as a sporting achievement.
This politicization will also extend to the excellent American female soccer players, truly a great shame.
