Fox News host Sean Hannity was quick to say he didn’t know where the prediction of a “red tsunami” came from after the GOP’s less-than-stellar results in this week’s midterm elections.

The polls “in every key race were in the margin of error,” Hannity earnestly told the audience of his widely watched prime-time show Wednesday.

But that wasn’t the line taken by his colleagues on their conservative network in the run-up to Tuesday’s vote.

On Thursday, The Washington Post released a stinging supercut that started with Hannity’s post-election downplaying of the “red wave” rhetoric before showing preelection footage of other Fox personalities hyping it to the max.

The red wave is building


Less than three weeks out from the midterm elections, the polls are moving in one direction. Even MSNBC's Joe Scarborough “senses” the shift in voter sentiment.

Earlier this week, he spoke to NBC analyst Steve Kornacki, who compared the midterm elections to previous elections. He sees striking similarities to 2014 when a “slow and late-building wave to the point where, even on election night, the magnitude of it took some folks by surprise.” He pointed out that Republicans in 2014 won back the Senate and “reached their highest level in terms of House seats since 1928.”


As Democratic candidates try in vain to resurrect the fervor among pro-choice voters triggered by the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade, Kornacki confirmed the obvious: The economy, inflation, and crime are the most important issues.

~ Signs of a red wave abound. Although it’s premature to predict that Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin will pull off an upset victory against New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, he has managed to close the gap from 24 points to 4 in a newly released Quinnipiac poll . New York hasn’t elected a Republican governor in two decades, but it seems Zeldin’s singular focus on the state’s skyrocketing crime rate is resonating with voters.

With little more than a week to go before Election Day, Republicans appear poised to once again dominate the state. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is running well ahead of his Democratic rival, former Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.), while Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.) is struggling to break through in her bid to unseat Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) The outlook is already ominous for Florida Democrats. The number of registered Republican voters surpassed the number of registered Democrats last fall for the first time in the state’s modern political history. And that edge has only expanded since then.

In November 2021, there were about 6,000 more registered Republican voters than there were Democrats. As of the end of September, that advantage stood at nearly 300,000, according to data collected by the state. By comparison, in 2008, when former President Obama carried Florida by about 200,000 votes, there were nearly 700,000 more registered Democrats in the state than Republicans.

In another worrisome sign for Florida Democrats, Republicans pulled ahead in early voting on Thursday. Democrats have typically relied on building up a strong early vote advantage to make up for shortfalls in Election Day voting, which tends to be dominated by Republicans.
