When Ron DeSantis took office as the 46th governor of the state of Florida in January 2019, it was three months after Hurricane Michael blew ashore as the second Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the United States in the past 30 years.

Although the storm came ashore during former Gov. Rick Scott's administration, the $25 billion-dollar clean-up would become one of DeSantis' first responsibilities.

Scott had been famous for forbidding the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to use the words "climate change" and "global warming" in any official communication, but DeSantis took a different approach. Wasting no time, he signed an executive order during his first week in office addressing a series of environmental issues and appointing a chief science officer to "prioritize scientific data, research, monitoring, and analysis. He also announced the creation of the Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection to help communities deal with rising sea levels.

The change in tone from the Scott administration to the DeSantis governorship would appear that Florida, a state highly susceptible to the impacts of global warming, might have a conservative leader ready to move past climate denial and ready to take legitimate action.

It's obvious that evince either didn't read this article critically, or didn't recognize it's flawed conclusions. The article cited in the OP is bad, terrible, and doesn't support the conclusion it makes.

Let me start by citing the link again for your perusal.

The first roughly half of it is drivel and spin trying to convince you DeSantis is a "climate denier" and anti-science without ever using facts.

Then it gets into trying to argue for anthropogenic climate change--aka Gorebal Warming.

It starts with the author making this erroneous citation:

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it is "extremely likely" that over 95% of human activity is the "dominant cause" of global warming, leading to climate change, resulting in more severe weather events.

Note how that is worded. 95% of human activity is the dominant cause of global warming. That's what it says.

But there is a link to the EPA embedded within that:

Here's what the EPA actually says:

This record shows that the climate varies naturally over a wide range of time scales, but this variability does not explain the observed warming since the 1950s. Rather, it is extremely likely (> 95%) that human activities have been the dominant cause of that warming.

95% of human activity is not the dominant cause. The EPA says that it is likely human activities have been the dominant cause without citing which ones. That is, a select few human activities could be the cause.

The EPA then cites just two:

Human activities have contributed substantially to climate change through:

Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Reflectivity or Absorption of the Sun’s Energy

So, our erstwhile journalist shows that she doesn't understand statistics in the simplest form. That doesn't bode well for her explaining anything scientific.

The she cites this chowderhead of an academic:

Another expert who spoke with ABC News agreed that while DeSantis is taking some action to address climate change's impacts on Florida, the governor could do more.

"He's spending a lot of money on adapting to climate change," said Steven Cohen, a professor at Columbia University's School of Public Affairs and director of the Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management.

Cohen said that by investing in adaptation strategies, DeSantis is acknowledging that climate change is a reality, but to mitigate it would mean an investment in reducing Florida's emissions and positioning the state to enter the competitive race for clean energy alternatives.

"Renewable energy is going to be a lot less expensive than fossil fuels and suddenly [Florida] is going to find its energy economy is not competitive with other places," Cohen told ABC News. "You would think that solar would be a big thing in Florida, but in fact, the utilities have been discouraging it and the state's not doing anything to promote it."

This is patently untrue. Wind and solar are grotesquely more expensive and the proof is that everywhere they have been expanded to a significant portion of a nation's energy portfolio electric power has become less and less affordable. I'll save the details of that for another thread, but have proven it repeatedly on this board and elsewhere.
So, you have a reality denier academic pushing a political agenda who isn't a scientist, and like our author clueless about engineering and science.

The fourth-strongest hurricane to ever make landfall in Florida, it rapidly intensified to a Category 4 as it traveled over the warmer-than-average Gulf waters -- a direct consequence of climate change.

Then she cites the above which is just repeating popular Leftist drivel on climate

The acting director of the National Hurricane Center cautioned CNN host Don Lemon against linking Hurricane Ian directly to climate change in a Tuesday night interview.

Jamie Rhome joined Lemon on his show “Don Lemon Tonight” to discuss the expected impact of Ian ahead of its landfall in Florida, when the liberal host questioned how climate change is impacting the hurricane.

When the head of the NOAA, the US's premier weather science agency says Ian was not related to climate change, I'll take his word on it over the Leftist drivel of an anti-science journalist.

And, she's correct. She took this issue in her article and contributed to the polarization of the issue. The article is worthless and the author, Tracy Wholf is a scientific illiterate.

Just as a closing note, I'll add some bio on Tracy Wholf.

She bills herself as a "producer and actor" who comes from a non-science, liberal arts background.

DeSantis has signed legislation during his term in office allocating resources for restoring the everglades and for sea-level rise preparedness. However, he has not addressed the overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change is real and caused by the burning of fossil fuels, facts that a majority of Republicans in Congress, for example, deny are true as well.

Luigi Guadarrama, the political director of the Sierra Club's Florida chapter, said in an interview with the American Independent Foundation that DeSantis' support for so-called resiliency programs "makes him seem as if he's got environmental policies. But climate change is something around which there is scientific consensus. We're not seeing a whole lot of common sense in his policies. He tends to toss aside serious ideas about climate change as just 'left-wing politics,' not expert opinions from scientists."
