Given that there were lawyers advising him before hand not to do it, then months of polite negotiations, then less polite negotiations, then a legal subpoena requiring him to hand the documents back... Only a fool would not know after almost two years of being told that it was coming to a warrant being served.
That being said, trump is a fool, so he may not have known. Even Stone admits that trump only figured out what was coming "several days ahead of time", and not the over a year that a sane person would have known.

We don’t know what he did or planned to do with the material he brought from the White House when he finally left, that’s the problem. We are asked to believe that he didn’t know his underlings had brought it, so he’s in the clear.
With a normal ex-president this might not be such a concern. But with a mendacious egomaniac to whom honor and patriotism mean nothing, who knows? We do know he has behaved in ways that no president or ex-president ever has before.

Garland's no fool. He proceeded very professionally and carefully. He's smarter than Barr, and most other prior AG's.. unlike Barr, however, he's not an evil, authoritarian sniffing douche and actually enforces the law, even when it comes to people in power.
I don't know if y'all have picked up on my sentiment, I hate Bill Barr with a passion. He was America's top law enforcement officer, breaking the law.
