Default Dems push Biden climate, health priorities toward Senate OK

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats drove their election-year economic package toward Senate approval early Sunday, debating a measure with less ambition than President Joe Biden’s original domestic vision but that touches deep-rooted party dreams of slowing global warming, moderating pharmaceutical costs and taxing immense corporations.

Debate began Saturday and by early Sunday morning, Democrats had swatted down over a dozen Republican amendments designed to torpedo the legislation or create campaign ads attacking Democratic senators. Despite unanimous GOP opposition, Democratic unity in the 50-50 chamber — buttressed by Vice President Kamala Harris’ tiebreaking vote — suggested the party was on track for a morale-boosting victory three months from elections when congressional control is at stake.

Default Senate Nearing Final Vote on Climate and Tax Bill

The $35 cap on insulin prices for private insurers is officially out of the bill. Seven Republicans voted with Democrats to keep the cap for private insurers in the bill, but a 57-to-43 margin is three votes short of overcoming the objection.

In four years Trump's only substantial legislative accomplishment was a bill largely intended to reduce taxes on the wealthy.

If this bill passes, the last 18 months have seen a slew of liberal priorities passed despite razor thin margins in Congress: economic stimulus bill, infrastructure bill, climate, healthcare, and corporate tax bill. It would be nice if the marriage equality bill passed too.

The GOP is still the party of violent overthrow of the government.

Just now, Sanders tried to woo the support of his caucus behind an amendment that would restore monthly expanded payments to most families with children — a plan all but one Democrat support. But it failed 1 to 97, as Democrats kept a promise to vote down most amendments to protect the overall package. (“C’mon Bernie,” Sherrod Brown of Ohio could be heard muttering on a hot mic after a slightly testy exchange.)

"The vote-a-rama has now crossed the 12-hour mark, having begun 11:31 p.m. Saturday. But there is still no indication of when the votes may end, as Republicans continue to offer amendments."
