Hiroshima marks 77th anniversary of US atomic bombing as Guterres warns of growing nuclear threat

The Japanese city of Hiroshima has marked the 77th anniversary of the US atomic bombing during the World War 2.

The ceremony began with a silent prayer at 8:15 am on Saturday, right at the time when the bomb was dropped.

Hibakusha, young peace activists, Japan’s Prime Minister, local authorities, and UN chief António Guterres all attended the ceremony.

"Humanity is playing with a loaded gun," said Guterres, who became the first UN chief to attend since his predecessor Ban Ki Moon in 2010.

Guterres warned of the growing threats in the Middle East, the crisis in Ukraine and the Korean peninsula while describing the horrors endured by the Japanese city.

"Tens of thousands of people were killed in this city in the blink of an eye. Women, children and men were incinerated in a hellish fire." said the UN chief, adding, “The world must never forget what happened here. The memory of those who died, and the legacy of those who survived will never be extinguished.”

Survivors were "cursed with a radioactive legacy" of cancer and other health problems, he said, noting, “Three-quarters of a century later, we must ask what we’ve learned from the mushroom cloud that swelled above this city in 1945.”

Sanctions prevent inspections of US nuclear arms by Russian inspectors.

Moscow blames Ukraine war sanctions for preventing mutual inspection of its nuclear arms under New Start treaty

Russia has suspended an arrangement that allowed US and Russian inspectors to visit each other’s nuclear weapons sites under the 2010 New Start treaty, in a new blow to arms control.

Mutual inspections had been suspended as a health precaution since the start of the Covid pandemic, but a foreign ministry statement on Monday added another reason Russia is unwilling to restart them. It argued that US sanctions imposed because of the invasion of Ukraine stopped Russian inspectors travelling to the US.

“There are no similar obstacles to the arrival of American inspectors in Russia,” the statement said. “The Russian foreign ministry raised this issue with the relevant countries, but did not receive an answer.”

One of the comments made in that piece was:

Think about that for a bit.

I imagine that there are many fools who mistakenly believe that they would survive a nuclear exchange.
    They won't .

I imagine there are many fools who would want to survive a nuclear exchange.

I am not one of them...and I have never been one of them.

The comment, Moon, is silly. It is saying that he is the first one...since the last one...to do it.

It is like noting that Joe Biden is the first president to do something since Trump.

Yes, I don't feel the need to mention such errors to folks who are not on my thread-ban list.
There are enough pompous twats frequenting this forum already.

Just something that came to mind.

The second bomb was dropped on my birthday...today.

I'm "celebrating" (the birthday) by going to a hospital in about an hour where a doctor will do a bit of work on my esophagus. I'd much rather go out and have dinner and a few drinks with my wife, but at my age, better to go along with what the doctors suggest. I want to be on the right side of the grass for playing golf for a while longer.

Good luck and fair winds, sport. Caution is wise.

    Happy birthday- and many more.

It could have been said more eloquently but isn't his point the 12 year time gap?

It does come across as silly- but English is unlikely to be the author's first language. It's a lot better than my Farsi though.
