Survey of 1,000 registered US voters also reveals that most Americans agree government is ‘corrupt and rigged’

More than one quarter of US residents feel so estranged from their government that they feel it might “soon be necessary to take up arms” against it, a poll released on Thursday claimed.

This survey of 1,000 registered US voters, published by the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics (IOP), also revealed that most Americans agree the government is “corrupt and rigged against everyday people like me”.

The data suggests that extreme polarization in US politics – and its impact on Americans’ relationships with each other – remain strong. These statistics come as a congressional committee is holding public hearings on the January 6 insurrection.

The survey indicates that distrust in government varies among party lines. While 56% of participants said they “generally trust elections to be conducted fairly and counted accurately”, Republicans, Democrats and independents were dramatically split on this point. Nearly 80% of Democrats voiced overall trust in elections, but that number dipped to 51% among independents and a mere 33% of Republicans.

Per the poll, 49% of Americans concurred that they “more and more feel like a stranger in my own country”. Again, this number reflected sharp political divisions: the sentiment was held by 69% of self-described “strong Republicans”, 65% of self-described “very conservative” persons, and 38% of “strong Democrats”.

Of the 28% of voters who felt it might soon be necessary “to take up arms against the government”, 37% had guns in their homes, according to the data.

One-third of Republicans – including 45% of “strong Republicans – hold this belief about taking up arms. 35% of independent voters, and 20% of Democrats, also agreed, the poll said.
Why don't they take arms and reinstall Trump as president?!! 25% of 330 million is 8,250,000, that a nice well regulated militia?!!

Not many people in Canada, UK, Australia - the rest of the Anglosphere - feel that “it might soon be necessary to take up arms against the government”. Yet 25%+ of Americans talk that way. Why?

Have two and a half centuries of the great American experiment come to this? And ffs don’t say it’s because of the Democrats. There are center-left parties in all those countries; that’s normal in democracies. Is the US somehow different?

I'm surprised the number is so low given the way the shitbag politicians have been screwing things up for more than a decade now...

90% did in 1776............most of you cowards wouldn't do a damn thing anyway. especially if you had someone like trump or desantis in office, you'd be fucking cheering, you hypocritical shit
A sad commentary on we, as a people, and our viewpoint of our freedom can be summed up like this. We have liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, yet those very people look at Constitutionalists as radical and extreme.................so those liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans must believe that the constitution is radical and extreme.

If there's one thing Americans generally hate, it's politicians and government. That's nothing new either.

I hope every one of you deranged shitbags tries it and gets blown into pieces so small you have to be hosed into the sewer where you belong and likely came from to begin with.

Human ignorance is synonymous with conservatism.

    Fucking clowns.

Serious question: does anyone think that an armed insurrection (that was successful) would lead to MORE freedom for the people?

I can't help but think about 1/6. If that crew actually took over our government - we would most certainly not be more free. At least many Americans would not be.

We live with more liberty than most humans in the history of the earth. I'm still mystified how people think this is anything close to tyranny. And if they do, they can change things peacefully - they just need to win w/ their ideas, build voting coalitions, and change our leaders on election days, which happen quite frequently.

I guess that's probably too much effort.

what you find yourself unable to reconcile is that not everybody is a two dimensional individual like you idiots are. there are many of us 'independents' that you stupidly classify as rightwing/trumpists/fence sitters......WE will be the deciding factor in that. IF there should be a revolution and we win, yes.....there will be more freedom for those that wish more freedom. For those of you slaves that wish more government control, there will only be exile.
