If most folks will not watch (which most will not) what happens to democracy and what do you plan to do to then "save democracy" if folks will not do what you want them to do?

Don't let him bully you. Just tell him weather people watch it during the day or not, the hearings are rebroadcast at night. The rebroadcasts at night summarize the hearings and provide commentary.
