I grew up watching major league baseball in the 1950s. Note the lower-case letters.

Unlike today, the expressions "American League" and "National League" referred to actual discreet and competing leagues with their own league administrations; they were not mere brand names of Major League Baseball (with upper case letters).

There were 154 regular season games, not 162, and both separate and discrete leagues felt that that 154 games were enough to identify who their league champions were.
The long regular season was rewarded. No need for playoffs.

As for the World Series, that wasn't merely the final round of some tournament that ended in freezing November.
That was a battle of champions in early October--held in the daytime. Both teams were already true league champions.

That was the baseball that I remember. Sixteen big league teams in only eleven cities.
Fifty straight years of franchise stability (1903-1952).
No west coast games that ended after 2AM.

I'm glad that I got to see it, because what we have now is tacky in comparison.
I'm glad that I got to see the real thing while it lasted.
I'll always remember shaking Ted Williams' hand.

I don’t know. The teams that I’d like to watch the most are blacked out. All four of them. I was having some difficulty with my subscription to MLB online and even the lady I talked to on the phone (I happened to mention ‘in passing’ how much their policy stinks even though I knew this poor lady could do nothing about it) said, “Oh, you do live in a bad zip code.”

So I get to see all the teams that I want to lose …

Yeah, they do. Way way back in the day I was a minor league player and our games were blacked out too. Well, delayed, you could hear the radio call after the game was over but still, kinda the same thing.
Don't be afraid to see what you see

    5/19/22 … 3:48 pm

Case in point: There are two games going on right now. Both are tied. I can’t watch either one.

I had to watch the Yankees and the Orioles this afternoon. Big whoop! I rooted for the defense.

Did I mention that the MLB blackout policy really stinks? Well, it does.

Your right, baseball games used to be the one professional sport still affordable, but now, right up there with the rest of them, need a mortgage to take the family

Happily, minor league baseball is still thriving, and offers the best entertainment for the buck

Called TV and money, plus, keep in mind, in the era you are talking about, there were only half dozen teams every year, and usually the same, that had the capability of reaching the World Series let alone winning it

I used to buy $6 tickets to sit in the centre field bleachers and watch the Mariners lose.

Football is still far and away my number one sport. BUT,........on a lazy day, man its nice to sit back and watch a good baseball game on tv, or even just listen on the radio. With football,...every play is intense, critical,....edge of youre seat. But baseball you can just kinda follow. Watch for a while,...then click over to something else,...then click back,....take a short snooze...LOL,...then back to watching. PERFECT for a lazy Sunday afternoon. LOVE IT! BTW,...there is STILL nobody as good to listen to as the GREAT Bob Uecker. " Get up...get up...get OTTA here...GONE!!! "

In some ways baseball is one of the hardest sports to truly master. Case in point.......Even the leagues top notch hitters fail 60-70 percent of the time.
