Republicans lost an easy election even before Roe v. Wade was overturned
It was a minor election, but it might just be a bell weather of things to come. The Michigan 74th House of Representatives district was supposed to be easy for Republicans. They have held it for as long as anyone can remember. It is in rural, almost all white Michigan.
The Republican Party put forward Robert Regan, a firebrand alt righter. He famously said he tells his daughters, "if rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it." His main issue was fighting to get trump back as president. He supports Putin's invasion of Ukraine, and thinks the pandemic was a hoax. He even thinks that "feminism...is a Jewish program to degrade and subjugate white men."
But he was running in a district that went for trump by 16 points in 2020, so these should have all been safe positions.
The Democratic Party put forward the extremely moderate Carol Glanville. Glanville has a bachelors degree in Spanish, and a masters in education. She says reasonable things, which she then follows through with.
She won 52% of the vote, with Regan only getting 40% of the vote. Many voters were disgusted by Regan, but unwilling to vote for a Democrat, so submitted write in votes.
Daniel Patrick Moynihan said it best, "You are entitled to your opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts."
Paul Begala, "Politics is show business for ugly people."
Stephen Colbert, "Reality has a well known liberal bias."
trump is a child rapist. We all know it.
