Steelers make long-awaited QB pick by taking Kenny Pickett in NFL draft

The Steelers on Thursday selected Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett with the No. 20 pick of the NFL draft on Thursday night, marking the most significant investment the franchise has made at the position since its 2004 pick of Roethlisberger, who retired this offseason.

Pickett was the first quarterback selected in the draft.

"We're super, super excited to draft Kenny Pickett," general manager Kevin Colbert said in a news conference after making the selection. "Honestly, I never thought he would make it to our pick."

Well Christie? Do I know my stuff or what? Told you three weeks ago they were drafting Pickett. I think you got a good one. Ive seen the kid play,....he's what I would call a real GAMER. Has that "IT" factor to him. You guys got a good one Christie,....congrats! Heres what to look for........ He will most probably sit behind Trubisky and learn the offense, the pro game, ect ect....for the first 9 or 10 games next year. THATS GOOD FOR HIM! Better than rushing it. He will end up starting the last 6 games or so next season and from there out remain your starter for years to come if all goes well. Best of luck.

Enjoy! This guy puts out the best pre draft Highlight films for more serious fans. Better than most which are just glorified MUSIC video's . I like to focus on the actual player.

I forget for a sec,....you are in Ohio. Must be a Browns or Cincy fan. Both hate Pittsburgh and piitsburgh hates them... I was really pulling for the Bengals in the super bowl. HUGE Joe Burrow fan. Reminds me of a young Joe Montana,....always calm and cool. Keeps his head. He's gonna do big things in the NFL. He already has actually.

You do! One of my fanbuds texted that all the hype about Willis around here was just a smokescreen. I was good with Willis because I never dreamed Pickett would last until the 20th round. Even Kevin Colbert was surprised. And it was extra special that Pickett's a hometown guy. I'm wishing the best for him and hope it works out. Maybe we'll see a hint of his skills in pre-season. Thanks for your good wishes.

Oops, not a hometown guy, just a Pitt guy. But we'll take him anyway.

You guys were correct to pass on Willis. Career backup at best. Scouts use a tool called a heat map. Basically its just a diagram of the field showing where all his passes are thrown to. I kid you not,....his shows the entire whole middle of the field EMPTY. Almost All passes thrown outside. This means he cannot read coverage or defenses and is afraid of getting picked off. Also means his coaches dont want him throwing middle either. If you cant throw to the middle, you cant play QB,....not in the NFL anyway. In the NFL or even big time college ball you simply cant take that much of the field away for the QB,.....makes it way too easy to defend for the defense. Probably explains why he went to such a small school.

Heat map, who woulda thunk it? That makes sense and I guess Willis would need a lot of training for a course correction. Now Pickett's looking better and better to me.

I texted my fanbuds to ask their opinions on the WR pick, George Pickens. Still waiting to hear back.
