Judaism is a religion, and being Hebrew is an ethnicity. Both folks of the religion and the separate ethnicity are called "Jews". I get that you don't want to recognize the ethnicity, but in today's society, and among racist jackwipes, the reality is most folks do.

I think if a person responded with 'I'm Hebrew', I would register that as a Location rather than a Religion.
Like, if a person said "I'm Catholic", wouldn't tell me much. Saying "I'm Italian" would.

Jew refers to a religion, an ethnicity, and a location.
The ancient kingdom of Judah is precisely where we get the name Jew. Judah was located where modern Israel is today, and is the traditional home of people who spoke Hebrew and Aramaic, practiced the Jewish religion, and kept the Jewish law.

Well, to me 'race' is 'Caucasion', 'Negroid', and 'Mongoloid'. You know, White, Black, and Asian, and is pretty easy to distinguish. If people ask: "Where are you from?" It usually means 'nationality'. Some location.

Arab = Central Semite.
Hebrew = Western Semite.

So Hebrews (Jews) and Arabs are both 'Semites' but from different parts of the same Region.
And, 'Jews' may refer to themselves as such to distinguish themselves from other Western Semites like Palestinians, Lebanese, and Syrians.

Or, ... are Jews called 'Jews' to distinguish them from other Arabs ... that are automatically assumed to be 'Muslim'.

On another note, I had a friend who called his parents 'Jews' rather than 'Hungarians'. I asked him about this years later, and he said that his mother put down 'Hungarian', but was told to put down 'Jew'.

I always thought 'Jew' was a religious designation. Now, I'm wondering if it means 'Arab but not Muslim'. Any thoughts on this?

Semites are a language family, nothing more, like Indo-European, Bantu, or Austro-Asiatic. It doesn't imply anything more than linguistic heritage. Russians and Portuguese share the same linguistic heritage, but nobody claims they share the same nationality or cultural heritage

Jew collectively refers to a religion an ethnicity and a specific homeland location in the eastern Mediterranean Levant.
