Inflation numbers are usually overstated, in that they do not adjust for consumer preferences adjusting. Basically, if egg prices go up, but cereal goes down, consumers buy cereal for breakfast. The statistic takers do not switch preferences with prices, so overstate inflation.

And there is a lot being done to try to lower inflation from the current 5% to 7% rate to a better 2% to 4% rate. The Fed is working hard on this.
