Default Justice Breyer a "pragmatic" moderate. Why is that good?

Several articles about Breyer praise him for being a moderate. Now why are 'liberals' supposed to be moderates but the conservatives on the court are allowed to be right wing ideologues?

Because a much higher percentage of conservatives are either extremist right-wing ideologues, or willing to give extremist right-wing ideologues a pass and go along with whatever they do.

The progressive left is on the path to becoming the same way. The opposite side of the same coin.

And the country will continue to become more and more divided.

So our Supreme Court kept going farther to the right, but we are supposed to hold the liberals in check by appointing moderates? Why?
