Environmentalists demand UNESCO intervenes to end the Highland Hunt
Argyllshire anti-hunt activists have written to UNESCO requesting international recognition of the Western haggis which, they claim, is being hunted to extinction by English lairds deprived of their horse and hounds spectacles south of the border by legislation favouring the hunt saboteurs. Although ' drag hunting ' is still permitted , wherein a dummy fox is scented and dragged to present a 'scent ' for the packs to follow , some hunt-masters have allowed a live fox to be captured and loosed for the hounds to kill at the culmination of the ' drag '. Prosecutions have followed and, in four cases, heavy fines. The master of the Cumberland Foxhounds was actually jailed for spitting at the sentencing judge.
Such restrictions have caused the larger foxhound packs to switch to haggis-shoots on the vast private Scottish estates, beloved of English royalty and gentry, to which observers and saboteurs cannot easily gain access. In response they have formed a unified Scottish protest group which they hope will , firstly, persuade UNESCO to declare the Western haggis uniquely Scottish which will be followed by petitions to the World Wildlife Fund to have it declared an endangered species.
"It's absolutely ludicrous. They've blocked our fox-hunting with their bleeding-heart sabs and now they want to deny us access to the Highland Hunt " Reginald Cartes-Botham .
To date, the gaming lobby has been unable to find a suitable defence in law- but have allowed dogs to roam free on the animals breeding habitat. No intent has yet been proven to the satisfaction of the Highland Constabulary but local hunt saboteur , Rory McCloud , states that his group will continue to harrass and harry the huntsmen until they move on.
McCloud- ' We'll stek it tae the bloated numpties ' til they're awa '
Despite pleas for calm further confrontation is expected on traditional Burn's Night, which falls upon January 25th during 2022, accompanied by a full moon which favours both adversaries.
