well to be fair and more importantly honest this exersize was not to fund "education" it was to give the teachers some funds for in-class niceties that they normally pay for out of their own pockets.

do you prefer that they conduct bake sales ? at least this way there is no up front costs for them.

if anyone should be feeling bad its central administration who refuse to buy them the supplies and teaching aids that this money goes toward. In that respect this is very much a commentary on ''throwing money'. just a rather different one.

You hit the nail on the head. People understandably say WTF when they hear about teachers having to buy supplies for instance. And the response, again understandably, is we should give them more money. But as you stated even when given more money it doesn’t necessarily mean it will reach the classroom. It gets caught up and spent on huge levels of administration.

They work in the public school system...that is government responsibility.

So in South Dakota they do this thing. A bunch of one dollar bills are set out on some ice in a hockey rink. Then teachers from local schools are told to spend the next ten minutes trying to grab as much money as they can to fund their classes, while people laugh at them for being dumb enough to try to educate the next generation of South Dakotans when clearly no one in South Dakota cares about education.

These are public school teachers from Sioux Falls, SD.
A prosperous and fast growing city with above average incomes-per-capita.
This is NOT some poor area that is short of tax dollars.

If the teachers are short of funds - it is strictly because the local/state government is not giving them enough money and/or the teachers are useless at managing funds.
It has NOTHING to do with capitalism or the local economy of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

I am NOT saying America is not in trouble.
But this is NOT an example of anything fundamentally wrong with America.
This is just bureaucratic incompetence.
