Default UNESCO announces major coral reef discovery at depth.

UNESCO makes major coral reef discovery at depth.

Explorers discover ‘unrivaled’ reef of rose-shaped corals that could hold lessons for warming oceans

French researchers say they have discovered one of the world’s largest healthy coral reefs, possibly paving the way for similar discoveries in locations that have not yet been explored, the Paris-based UNESCO agency announced Thursday.

Discovered off the coast of Tahiti, an island in the Pacific Ocean that’s attached to France, the reef has been explored since late last year and is estimated to be almost two miles long. Expedition project 1Ocean, which was involved in the exploration, said the reef’s state of conservation is “unrivaled” at a time when global warming, pollution and overfishing are threatening corals’ survival.

Photos released by the team showed a seabed covered with rose-shaped corals — some of them more than 6 feet in diameter.

“The fact that we are finding a very healthy and pristine coral reef at depths of 30 to 70 meters (98 to 230 feet) is quite unusual,” said UNESCO marine policy official Julian Barbière, adding that the discovery may have implications that go beyond Tahiti.

“There could be all those reefs out there that have not been mapped or studied,” he said.

You'll remember UNESCO ? It's the international organization that the US withdrew from because it recognized Palestine. Yeah, really.

Anyway, a property of reef material is that , when its harvested by dredger and ground up, it makes a passable washing-powder additive.

Troll gate open. Anti-UNESCO trolls are such a good laugh.

Not at all. These newly-discovered corals haven't appeared as a result of anthropogenic change to the oceans- they're not nature's answer to Man's climatic stupidity- they've simply survived to date at depth because they haven't yet been affected.

I wonder if ocean acidification is not yet a problem at these depths because the water is not in direct contact and communication with atmospheric CO2.

besides the fact that all you want to do is grind them up for detergent, you overlook the fact that climate change does not affect some parts of the earth and ignore others.......if the climate warms it benefits those creatures that thrive in a warmer climate......

One of the most remarkable experiences in my life was snorkeling on a reef. I could do that all day long.

It is unfortunate that climate deniers are bent on destroying the rain forests of the sea.

The earth will survive but humans will have to learn how to live with hurricanes, flooding, fire and drought. Shortages of food and water have already started.

    Argue it out with Mr. Attenborough;

"The Great Barrier Reef is in grave danger. The twin perils brought by climate change – an increase in the temperature of the ocean and in its acidity – threaten its very existence." - Sir David Attenborough

Do tell- why is it in your interests to deny that the Great Barrier Reef is being destroyed by acidity and higher temperatures ? What's in it for you ?

that is not what is happening

we don't deny change - we deny your solutions. you are the cause - not the solution

this country consumes too much? why? you keep rewriting the rules so we can consume more and more and more look at where all your cries go - you need to take from the few and give to the many - which will make the few consume even more

if our economy ever recedes - meaning we consume less - you will go to great lengths to encourage more consumption to get the economy rolling. our economy - which is based on debt - and living beyond our means so we can keep the system afloat

so spare me your indignation. dumb people have no answers - just whines and cries
