Sadly, many universities pay the football staff more than the President of the entire university.

this is meaningless if you do not identify the source of those salaries.
additionally football pays for all the non-profit sports.

Most universities lose money on their football program.

Coaches are usually the highest paid public employees in every state. Next are the guys who manage the state's pension funds and medical school professors.

Yeah, college coaches are often the highest paid public employees in many states. The one variable there is coaches salaries, or portions of them, can often come from private donors.

    incorrect.
U of Alabama pays Saban none of his 4 million, while Auburn paid its ex coach 234000 of his 3 million.
And football pays for all the other non-revenue sports.

But really? Fuck them. Fuck private schools. No one cares.
Really? Look at our government financed public education system. We have the most expensive K-12 public education system on the planet on a per student basis and the outcomes suck. If government took over full payment of tuition for college, that too would simply give universities incentive to raise their tuition rates even more.

and those schools are not paying coaches millions because they are ordinary.

but that is a valid point that those schools have to justify. they usually add football to broaden name recognition. ODU here in Virginia changed conferences some years back to have a higher profile but their program has not flourished and their mildly successful basketball program has suffered because of it.

but more do break even with cable reaching further down the food chain.

Football does not even cover its own costs at most all colleges--very few actually make money.

"According to the NCAA, among the 65 autonomy schools in Division I, only 25 recorded a positive net generated revenue in 2019."

I don't have the stats handy. But I have seen research that after the successful top football programs, the vast majority of schools lose money.

pretty typical of the Power 5 though it is more common that, like Auburn, they pay a fraction of the total compensation.

Like I said, that is not typical. Top programs in the country, maybe. Vast majority lost money from football.
