Republicans never believed in democracy and the sovereignty of the people. At least, not in decades.
That is why they are the free world's most infamous gerrymanderers and vote surpressors.
“Today one of two political parties is an authoritarian party,” Bernstein comments. “You’d have to go back to the civil war to think of anything like the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6. You’d have to go back to [Confederate leader] Jefferson Davis, who was a Democrat, if you’re looking for a seditious leader of a faction of the country. Never has there been a seditious president of the United States until Donald Trump.”
Bernstein says: “Our democracy, before Trump, had ceased to be working well and for 25, 30, 35 years we were in what I’ve called ‘a cold civil war’ in this country. Trump ignited it and we’re not going to go back from this place unless there’s some great event that somehow unites this country.

Judge Juan M. Merchan wrote that Trump “appears to take the position that his situation and this case are unique and that the pre-trial publicity will never subside. However, this view does not align with reality.”

Without voting rights passing and stopping what's happening in these legislatures, I think the possibility is very real. Imagine if say, someone like Eastman was in a position to certify a state election. Maybe Arizona, or Georgia. He WOULD have submitted an alternate slate of electors, and the Republican Congress would have accepted it. I think that is very likely to happen in 2024, and there is nothing we can do to stop it. Then Trump installs his loyalists in DOJ, and the only remaining guardrail is SCOTUS. Want to count on this bunch of chowderheads to preserve democracy? Imagine DOJ prosecuting members of the press, members of Congress, anyone who opposes Trump. Who is going to stop it? I'd love to know, because right now, the answer is 'no one'. It can happen here, and the likelihood of it happening goes up dramatically without specific legislation in place to stop it. But hey, at least we'll still have the filibuster, that's what's REALLY important. Carry on. As for me, I'm in the process of deciding which beach I'm going drinking cocktails on. So, to your point, while we might not call it a dictatorship, it will, for all intents and purpose be one. And what happens in 2028? Trump will declare a national emergency and call off elections. And again I ask.... who is going to stop him? Answer: No one.
