The pirates get safe haven by giving things to the local populations. It would be cheaper to simply help out Somalia more directly.
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

Just got finished watching Charlie Wilson's war. At the end he asks for a paltry 1 million dollars to build schools in post Soviet Afghanistan and other congressmen on the committee said there was no reason to send them money, The soviets were gone. This is American foreign policy at its worst. We never follow through with shit. By abandoning the Afghans after the Soviets left, we created the Taliban.

True. The US generally doesn't have any idea how stupid our foreign policy really is and how much it costs us.

Now that the captain has been rescued and the "pirates" that took him are dead, what will the US do next?

Will we insist on a UN Resolution that protects Somali waters from global dumping and its fishing industry from global rape?

    I doubt it.

Obama has a clear choice here, but Larry Summers, the subhuman thing that told the world to dump toxic wastes off Africa while he was at the World Bank is one of Obama's closest advisors.

Perhaps some are starting to get an understanding of why I do not support Obama.
AMERICAN HISTORY ITSELF IS A TESTAMENT TO THE STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE OF AFRICAN PEOPLE. WE, ALONG WITH THE COURGE AND SACRIFICES OF CONSCIOUS WHITE AMERICANS, LIKE VIOLA LIUZZO, EVERETT DIRKSEN, AND MANY OTHERS, HAVE FOUGHT AND DIED TOGETHER FOR OUR FREEDOM, AND FOR OUR SURVIVAL.

In America, rights are are not determined by what is just, fair, equitable, honest, nor by what Jesus would do. Rights are determined ONLY by what you can DEMAND.

He couldn't even get a resolution passed that condemned N. Korea for showing off their newest bomb delivery device. Russia refused to even suggest they had done something wrong.

We sat by and did nothing, watched instead of acted in any way, then couldn't even get a resolution through the Security Council. Yeah, we looked like a "manly" nation...

We looked real "manly" as we marched off to Iraq in shiny new uniforms being all we could be .. which resulted in the greatest strategic and military blunder in America history. The Bay of Pigs is miniscule compared to this tragedy.

We looked real "manly" as we marched off to Vietnam .. 60,000 dead Americans later .. we're running for our lives out of Saigon .. tail between our legs.

We look manly in Afghanistan .. where we're bound to see another Saigon Moment.

Somalia is no stranger to us .. we've had a bit of a Saigon Moment there as well.

Looking "manly" is not synonymous with acting intelligently.

We have a propensity to do the manly, reject the intelligent.

There are limits to military power.

A reality we have rarely understood, even when it fails right in front of our eyes.

I agree with you that he couldn't get a resolution on NK ..but that should not stop his attempts at leadership.

Unfortunately, in the world we live in, this is more often than not the case.

We didn't look "manly" marching into Iraq to protect ourselves against WMD that aren't even WMD in reality.

But when the government stands by and does nothing but talk, then can't even back up a threat of a resolution, it truly looks weak.

I agree with you .. but we look weak because wea ARE weak.

We are weak because we too often rush to look "manly."

The worst part of our policy was that we chose to funnel the money into Afghanistan through Pakistan. The Pakistani's got to choose who received the weapons, and they selectively gave them overwhelmingly to radicals such as the Taliban. When the Soviets left, the Taliban was left holding all of the weapons. At that point, funding for infrastructure, while very important, was a nonissue, seeing as how it would have been the Taliban running those schools.
