Default While Germany recklessly continues to reject nuclear power – Finland welcomes it.

    .
The Germans are truly insane, nice to see that not all Greens are loony tunes.

The parliamentary group leader of the Finnish Greens Atte Harjanne thinks EU classifying nuclear energy as a sustainable energy source is right and in WELT AM SONNTAG (WAMS) he explains why his party has dropped its anti-nuclear stance and why he thinks Germany is on the wrong track in terms of energy policy.

    Finnish Greens now welcome nuclear

The Finnish Greens used to be against nuclear energy, but today this is no longer the case. In 2020 they dropped their anti-nuclear stance because they now view it as a sustainable source of energy that makes it possible to get rid of fossil energy.

The German Greens, on the other hand, remain steadfast and refuse to allow nuclear power. Germany will be closing its last nuclear power plants in 2022. Coal plants will follow and be closed by the end of the 2030s. How the country will keep the lights on remains a mystery.

Nuclear is sustainable – very little waste

In the interview with WELT AM SONNTAG, Harjanne said nuclear power is sustainable and that the amount of waste “is very small compared to the huge amount of CO2-neutral energy that a nuclear power plant produces”. He also said Finland has solved the the problem of storing nuclear waste.

Wind and sun systems generate “problematic waste”.

Harriane also noted, “The production of solar plants and wind turbines also generates problematic waste.”

On why the Finnish Greens have become so open to nuclear energy: “Our ultimate goal is to become CO2 neutral, and for that we want to exhaust all possibilities based on science. If the inclusion of nuclear energy is the quickest way to get us there, the end justifies this means.”

Finland to be carbon-neutral by 2035

Overall, Harjanne expects Finland to be carbon neutral already by 2035, while Germany will need until 2045, if not longer. “If Finland were to go the German way and shut down all nuclear power plants, it would also take us that long or longer.”

Berlin on the wrong track – dependent on imports

Harjanne is satisfied with the EU’s decision to classify nuclear energy as sustainable, telling WAMS it’s “a compromise” but at the same called the classification of natural gas, a fossil fuel, as sustainable “absurd” and said that Berlin “is on the wrong track” and Germany “is making itself dependent on imports”.

    Rough transition for Germans

He added: “Getting out of nuclear and coal at the same time means a high demand for gas for a long transition period.”

Nice to see the Greens and politicians are not totally crazy everywhere, like they are in Germany.

I'm not totally against nukes. But they are generationally irresponsible.

We should keep developing natural sources.

It was stupid NIMBYs, Greens and Harry Reid that prevented nuclear waste being disposed of safely at Yucca Mountain despite over $15 billion spent on it. I don't know how times I've said but next generation nuclear like Molten Salt Reactors (MSR) produce far less high level waste and indeed will be able to use spent fuel in future, so please refrain from regurgitating tired old tropes.

Nuclear Power in Finland(Updated January 2022)

Finland has four nuclear reactors providing about 30% of its electricity.

A fifth reactor is under construction and another is planned, to take the nuclear contribution to about 60% and replace coal. Provisions for radioactive waste disposal are well advanced.

Finland's four existing reactors are among the world's most efficient, with an average lifetime capacity factor of over 90% and average capacity factor over the last ten years of almost 95%. Two boiling water reactors supplied by the Swedish company Asea Atomb are operated by Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO); and two modified Russian pressurised water reactors (VVER) with Western containment and control systems are operated by Fortum Corporationd.

Finnish reactors are remarkable in the extent to which they have been uprated since they were built. TVO's Olkiluoto 1&2 started up in 1978-80 at 660 MWe net; by 2010 they were rated at 880 MWe net each (one-third more) and their planned operating lifetime had been extended to 60 years, subject to safety evaluation every decade.

TVO now proposes progressively to uprate them further to 1000 MWe each. A 25 MWe uprate of Olkiluoto 1 over May-June 2010 was part of this, and involved replacement of low-pressure turbines. A similar uprate of unit 2 was undertaken over May-June 2011. With uprates, TVO aims “always to have 40 years of remaining technical lifetime”. In January 2017 TVO applied for 20-year operating licence renewal for both units, which was granted by the Finnish government in September 2018.

Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant on a sunny day in FinlandLoviisa (Image: Fortum)Fortum's two VVER-440 reactors at Loviisa have been uprated 18% from their design capacity of 420 net (465 MWe gross) in 1977-80 to 507 MWe net (531 MWe gross). They have an expected operating lifetime of 50 years. A 20-year licence extension was granted by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) in mid-2007, taking them to 2027 and 2030, subject to safety evaluation in 2015 and 2023. This was confirmed by STUK in February 2017.

In 2008, Areva and Siemens commenced a renewal project to install modern digital instrumentation and controls systems at the plant, expected to take six years, but Fortum terminated this in 2014 and transferred the work to Rolls-Royce, which completed it in 2018. Some €100 million was invested in the plant in 2016.

In August 2020, Fortum began the environmental impact assessment required to operate the two units beyond their current licences. The utility will seek a 20-year extension, allowing the units to operate until 2047 and 2050.

    Yucca Mountain wasn't safe disposal.

No place on the planet is.

Bullshit on steroids, I've no time for ignorant fools like you. Where do you think it being stored now, do you think that's safer?

Having personally benefitted from it, I'll go on record as being pro nuclear power.

No answer, why am I not surprised? Where's Jim and Jack when you need them?

Fact: Nuclear is the only energy source that prevents waste from going into the environment.

All the nuclear fuel ever generated in the US is safely contained & can fit on a single football field stacked less than 10 yards high.
