Default Biden’s ‘Summit for Democracy’ includes countries that hardly seem to qualify

By the State Department’s own account, the governments of both Pakistan and the Philippines, another invitee, are responsible for “unlawful or arbitrary killings.” Not making the cut are Hungary, a member of the European Union, and Turkey, a NATO ally, both of which have seen their democratic safeguards crumble in recent years.

The White House has been less than clear about how it made such calls for the event, which is being overseen by Shanthi Kalathil, coordinator for democracy and human rights at the National Security Council.

"The three overarching themes of the summit are defending against authoritarianism, addressing and fighting corruption, and promoting respect for human rights. Attendees are asked to make meaningful commitments to furthering democracy in their countries, with a follow-up summit planned for next year."

    ^ appreciate the question.

Learn not to base foreign policy on whether countries are "democratic" or "human rights abusers"
Instead base policy on real issues effecting both or more nations (bilateral or multilateral)

realpolitik in general..but i;ll give you one.

Trump negotiated with China over trade. The negotiations were over Chinese malign practices (IP theft and forced joint ventures) as well as the usual trade talks.

The Uighers never came into play ( the Muslim minority China persecutes in its western provinces)
and as a result the talks didn't stall on that

We got Phase 1 done before COVID hit and derailed Phase 2.

I mention this one in particular to you as Biden trade rep ( Katherine Tai) is continuing the same negotiations started by Trump

My guess: The invited countries brow beat Biden and his Minions of Ignorance and the whole thing disappears from the news cycle as just another fiasco of the Joke administration.

    Okay, thanks.

I think this democracy summit is not supposed to be about trade and is about theoretical issues in democracy.

true.. and there is nothing wrong with "spreading democracy" -the devil is in the details
Like invading Iraq was partially to nation build a "democracy in the middle east"
The Neocons did the same thing to Libya.

So spreading democracy is a worthy goal, it just cant be the primary goal between nations

"Summit for Democracy" with Duterte and Alvi. Wow.

That really deserves a Doge meme.

    "So Democrat"

    "Much Free"

    "Many Fair Vote"

    "Very Election"
