Biden Loses Ground Among ‘Fearful’ Young Voters: Poll

A new survey indicates that America’s young adults have a grim view of their future – politically, economically and socially. And they’re taking it out on Joe Biden.


America's young adults are unhappy, discouraged and anxious about the state of the nation – and are souring on President Joe Biden and other political leaders amid their dismay, a poll by Harvard University's Institute of Politics finds.

The biennial survey of 18-to-29-year-olds shows Biden with a 46% approval rating, a 13 percentage point drop from spring, with a majority disapproving of how the president, Democrats and Republicans are doing their jobs.


And the discontent goes well beyond individual policy-makers: A majority, 52%, believe America's democracy is "in trouble" or "failing," and just 18% believe the country is generally on the right track. More than a third – 35% – believe they will see a second civil war in their lifetimes, and a quarter think at least one state will secede from the union.

Asked about their overall view of the future of America, 55% of the young voters said they were "fearful," with 44% saying they were "hopeful." That represents a huge drop in optimism from spring, when 56% of youth in the IOP's poll said they were hopeful about the future.
