Default In the Michigan Shooting, What Is the School’s Responsibility?

First, a teacher found Ethan Crumbley searching online for ammunition. The next day, there was an alarming note on his desk: “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me.”

School officials met with Mr. Crumbley, 15, and his parents, informing them that he needed to begin counseling within 48 hours. After his parents resisted bringing him home, administrators allowed him to stay in school.

Shortly afterward, Mr. Crumbley fatally shot four students, according to the prosecutor in Oakland County, Mich., who laid out that stunning series of events on Friday while announcing involuntary manslaughter charges against the parents.

"Now, Oxford High School’s actions are also under a microscope, prompting questions about the school’s responsibility, and whether there could be legal repercussions for administrators. Asked if her office was looking into the conduct of school officials, Karen M. McDonald, the prosecutor, said, “The investigation is ongoing.”

They had no knowledge that the kid had easy access to a gun and ammo

The parents did know that and didn’t inform the school

He could not kill people with that drawing

I don’t know what the local laws were about allowing them to frisk him and check his belongings for a weapon

The school may have even asked the parents if he had access to guns

If they didn’t they should have

But the parents should have told the school the kid had access and training

    They gave it to him

He brought the gun to the principal's office in a backpack.

What makes this different is it actually happened. Lots of kids post crazy things online. Until he did it, he was just one of themWe realize that kids talk tough and angry. For many, it is part of going through puberty.

    That is what is suspected

    It’s likely true

Did the parents offer a check of their sons belongings to prove he was no threat?

Somewhat agree. Schools have a difficult job. But they required counselling within 48 hours. They knew it was more than a troubled adolescent.

They refused to take him home and the school allowed him to go back to class.

    Yes

It’s a way to get attention that

make a child that is feeling no one is giving them attention noticed

Negative attention is better than feeling like nothing

Most kids don't have a loaded pistol.

    Yes they did

    Was searching him discussed?

Did the parents say not to search him?

    Agreed

Most don’t have access to a weapon and ammo

The parents withheld that information from the school

Not clear what happened. They ran away and got caught. Tells you how responsible they are.
