That sort of thing did happen, until some tort reform stopped it.
Same thing with airplanes. If an airplane crashed because the guy flew into a storm, iced up, and hit a mountain, lawsuits typically would be filed against the plane manufacturer, the last five mechanics that worked on the airplane, the airport it departed from, ATC, the FAA, the NTSB, and practically who even looked at the airplane sitting on the tarmac before it left. Plane manufacturers simply went out of business, even though they easily won these lawsuits, because of the cost of constantly defending against them.
Both Cessna and Piper went out of business during that time.
Tort reform brought them back.
