Default Covid breakthrough as wonder-drug that cuts death risk by 80% approved in UK

A BREAKTHROUGH in the fight against coronavirus has been made in the UK as experts have approved the use of a wonder-drug that slashes the risk of death by up to 80 percent.

The monoclonal antibody sotrovimab, known as Xevudy, has been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for people in the UK at high risk of developing severe COVID-19. It has been made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and can cut the risk of infection requiring hospitalisation or death by 79 percent. In a statement, the company said: "In a clinical trial, a single dose of the monoclonal antibody was found to reduce the risk of hospitalisation and death by 79% in high-risk adults with symptomatic COVID-19 infection.

"Based on the clinical trial data, sotrovimab is most effective when taken during the early stages of infection and so the MHRA recommends its use as soon as possible and within five days of symptom onset."

A drug developed by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKlein (GSK.L) has been authorised by UK regulators in a move that could prove key in the treatment of the Omicron variant.

The makers say Xevudy (sotrovimab) works against the recently discovered mutation of COVID-19 and was found to cut hospital admission and death by 79%.

The drug is a monoclonal antibody and was cleared for use by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

GSK said it “retains activity against key mutations of the new Omicron Sars-CoV-2 variant”.

This runs in contrast to early tests of Regeneron’s antibody treatment Ronapreve, which found the mutations in Omicron may hold the drug back.

GSK’s chief scientific officer Hal Barron, said the company was working to expand access to the treatment worldwide.

So far the UK government has ordered 100,000 doses of the drug.

The development comes shortly after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) narrowly backed a pill to treat COVID made by drugs company Merck and partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics.

“This is yet another therapeutic that has been shown to be effective at protecting those most vulnerable to Covid-19, and signals another significant step forward in our fight against this devastating disease, said Dr June Raine, MHRA CEO.

Very good. But some JPP posters will say: "You can take it and still die of Covid, it's no use!"

Reiersen and other researchers conducted a study that tracked nearly 1,500 people in Brazil who were newly diagnosed with COVID-19. About half were treated with fluvoxamine, the rest with a placebo. The study concluded that among those treated with fluvoxamine, “COVID-19-related deaths fell by roughly 90%.”

An earlier, smaller study of 152 people with COVID-19 found that “none of the 80 patients who had received the drug experienced serious clinical deterioration.”

“The patients who took fluvoxamine did not develop serious breathing difficulties or require hospitalization for problems with lung function,” psychiatry professor Eric Lenze said in a report published by St. Louis’ Washington University.

Of those who took the placebo in the smaller study, on the other hand, more than 8% ended up needing hospitalization and intensive medical intervention.

Fluvoximine is a selective serotine-reuptake inhibitor that is typically prescribed to treat depression, social-anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. At this time, the drug has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of COVID-19 or any infection.

The findings from these studies are significant because fluvoxamine is plentiful, has been proven safe over many years of use (it was developed in the 1980s) and is cheap (a 10-day course costs about $4). It easily can be used worldwide, particularly in places where COVID-19 vaccines are not widely available.

Would have been so nice to know about this about 18 months ago. Isn't interesting that it is only after the fake vaccines have failed that we learn about cheap and easy other options.
