There's a couple of good reasons why someone who seems normal would turn into a Kool-Aid drinking fanatic:

1. Personal crises; divorce and/or death are the most common. Others are smaller personal tragedies like being mugged, robbed or fired.

2. Age related mental issues. It's no secret that most active JPPers are over 60, many over 65. Mental deterioration is a normal part of aging.

3. Mental illness. Previous mental illness issues can worsen with age. Similar to the body's weakening to fight infection, the same can happen with mental illnesses.
