One has to wonder how black market labor is impacting the official numbers. A few years ago it was thought that the illegal economy was North of 10% of GDP, I dont know it that is growing or shrinking, but I do know that illegals tend to work off of the books.

actually this isn't record setting employment......the number of employed persons is actually about 5M lower than those employed in 2019.....

this is just the lowest number of new unemployment claims......

I have an idea because I was raised by people that weathered the 1st one. Everybody is in for a rough time.

Probably the meatless meat will poof 1st. then the real meat will be super expensive, we're halfway to that already.

When squirrel and rabbit become necessary, I can deal with that.

Having yardbirds is a good idea. Goats and cows, too.

Make no mistake, it's coming and soon.

If that were true, you would expect unusually high numbers of people applying for unemployment benefits.

The unemployment rate dropped by about 2%, which is more than a tenth of a percent... And is now down at 4.6%.

We do not know what the structural unemployment rate is these days, but it is probably somewhere above 4.6%. That means we need the unemployment rate to raise a bit.

That's why you use the employment rate as a measure along with the U30 or U90 unemployment rate. If the first is relatively flat and steady and the second is going up or down it tells you how many people are actually looking for jobs and roughly how many are just unemployed, or even unemployable.

There is also a pretty good incentive not to work for people at the lower end of the employment scale right now. A typical one might be to claim social security disability (if you can get that), then tack on food stamps and other government giveaways like EIC, along with free Medicare and section 8 rent, then get a side gig that pays under-the-table so you don't report the income or work, and you can be living pretty large off OPM and the government. I think Chinese Disease and the government reaction to it showed many of those people with low paying jobs they could forego work, or just work some off-the-books, and live on welfare of various sorts so now they do.

One thing about this is that you can make statistics say whatever you want them to say but people actually have to feel their lives getting better. It cant just be numbers on a piece fo paper.
