After Karl pointed out that protesters were chanting “Hang Mike Pence,” Trump seemed to defend the chant as he repeated his baseless claims that he election result was fraudulent.

“Because it’s common sense, Jon,” Trump said. “It’s common sense that you’re supposed to protect. How can you — if you know a vote is fraudulent, right? — how can you pass on a fraudulent vote to Congress? How can you do that?”

The attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob determined to stop the affirmation of Biden’s win resulted in the death of five people and injuries to some 140 members of law enforcement who were struck with flagpoles, batons, baseball bats and pipes. The Justice Department says 675 people have been arrested and 210 have been charged with assaulting, impeding or resisting officers.

New York Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker on Friday described criticism of the controversial March 25 nursing home mandate as unfair and politically motivated.

New York and other states were following CDCguidance “in saying nursing homes cannot discriminate against residents with COVID-19,” Zucker wrote in a letter to The Daily News.

The move in part aimed to ease the risk hospitals would be overwhelmed, he noted.

And while public health laws say a nursing home can only accept patients if it can provide adequate care, Zucker stated just five of the 600-plus licensed nursing homes sought and received state aid in finding alternative care options for patients during the pandemic.

Further, Zucker noted COVID-19 deaths in New York nursing homes accounted for a comparatively lower percentage of the state’s overall fatalities due to the disease.

New York’s nursing homes, including presumed and confirmed deaths, accounted for about 25% of the state's more than 23,600 deaths due to COVID-19 as of Wednesday.

Florida’s nursing home deaths have accounted for about half of its more than 2,250 COVID-19 deaths. Ohio, which similarly never mandated nursing homes accept COVID-19 patients, has seen about 1,300 deaths in nursing homes, or about 70% of all fatalities.
