If you look at the timeline of that protest / riot (and this is no defense of anyone or any group there), the fighting and violence all started once Leftist counter-protesters arrived, illegally--they had no permit to do what they were doing unlike the original neo-Nazi / racist groups--and started shit with the radical Righties. Yes, to a good degree the radical Righties came prepared for a fight and the radical Left gave them one. It wasn't one side that was causing the violence, it was both.

As for the SPLC, they are so thoroughly discredited that they are next to worthless as a source. They have now repeatedly lost lawsuits for deformation and libel lying about various Right and Conservative persons and groups. Their site is grossly biased against the Right and Conservatives while they gloss over similar racist, hater, anti-Semitic, and violent groups on the Left giving excuses for them.
