Not true. One curriculum specialist used that as an example to meet the new Texas law requiring controversial subjects to be approached from differing perspectives. She suggested if a teacher had a book in the classroom on the Holocaust to include a book on the "other side." She realized she used a poor example and the superintendent apologized saying they recognized there was not another side to the Holocaust.

The Texas law was aimed at teaching critical race theory but nobody is clear how to meet the requirements of the law and she used a poor example.

I was wondering just exactly what 'the other side' story was. WWII didn't happen?

Quibbling over details (I e., number of deaths) is not "the other side".

The other side is the Nazi's justification for the final solution: that there was vast global cabal of Jewish bankers bent on subjugating German autonomy, and Jewish people themselves are avaricious parasites who constitute an existential threat to the integrity of Germany.


That is "the other side".

My side is that the final solution was unjustified, immoral, and criminal.

Thanks. That was my take on the limited info that was first passed around when the news broke. The comment sounded to me to be either sarcasm or taken way out of context.

So... what's the "other side" of slavery in America? What's the other side of the KKK and Jim Crow laws? What's the other side of the Japanese-American internment camps and confiscation of their property?

I think a good history class should explain why Japanese were interned or the importance of slavery to the Southern economy. An explanation does not justify an action. Value judgments should be left for the students to make. An education should not be telling students what was right or wrong but higher levels of education result in more tolerant individuals.

When I was in school, I was taught that the Holocaust involved Nazis rounding up and exterminating six million Jews in concentration camps.

But Texas, being the progressive openminded state that it is has insisted that texts teach an alternate narrative. Maybe some 'conservatives' here can lay out those alternative narratives. I'm interested.

I think a good history class should explain why Japanese were interned or the importance of slavery to the Southern economy. An explanation does not justify an action. Value judgments should be left for the students to make. An education should not be telling students what was right or wrong but higher levels of education result in more tolerant individuals.

An education should provide the facts and teach critical thinking about those facts. I agree; there is nothing wrong with teaching the reasons for the internment or for slavery in America. What is going on here though are parents and school boards who do not want those subjects mentioned until, maybe, college. To many RWers, anything that could remotely be about racial inequality = teaching that white ppl are evil.

As for my side, forcing teachers to teach that blacks and natives owned slaves too is both ridiculous and meant to excuse the truth. Lest you think I'm exaggerating, I have read multiple people's comments about "well, blacks had slaves too" here and elsewhere over the years. And just look at the RW Indigenous Day vs. Columbus Day threads here.
