As for teaching history, I know I was certainly curious about the views and motivations of Hitler and read some books about him and some of the memoirs of German leaders. That was not in an attempt to "balance" the two sides but understand what led to their actions. Any understanding of history requires a full understanding of the actions.

Having high school students read some original writing by German leaders to understand why they started the war is not the same thing as presenting both sides in an equal light. Learning about WWII is not complete without teaching about the aftermath of WWI and the economic situation the Germans faced. Teaching about something is not the same thing as justifying it.

I don't think Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima" were attempts to "balance" the two sides even though it certainly gave us a broader understanding of the issues.
